C’River sets aside N216m for land compensation

Liyel Imoke
The Cross River State Government has set aside N216.4m as compensation to owners of land acquired for various projects in the state.
The Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr. Raphael Uche, who disclosed this in Calabar Tuesday during a ministerial press briefing, said the compensation would be borne by the state government apart from the land acquired by the Cross River State Water Board Limited for waterworks at Ikom and Ogoja.
He said the compensation, which totalled N216.4m, had been approved by Governor Liyel Imoke, and was awaiting payment.
Giving a breakdown of the compensation to be paid, the commissioner said acquired land at Anyanganse would gulp N30.7m; Bebi Airstrip, N19m; Calabar Riviera Club, N52m; UNICEM evacuation road, N83.1m; and Theme Park N38.7m.
Uche said, “The compensation for the right of way to the International Convention Centre has been paid. In respect of the International Airport Road by-pass, enumeration for payment of compensation to the expropriated land owners is ongoing.
“For the Ogoja and Ikom stadia, the acquisitions are still very fresh and the revocation notices have been published.”
On revenue generation, Uche said N244.6m was realised for the 2011 fiscal period, adding that the comprehensive list of rented accommodation due to the ministry for the period stood at N27.8m.
He said the money had been approved for payment, adding that arrears of rent payment schedules up to 2009 had also been prepared for payment covering 2010 to 2011.
According to him, the main objective of the ministry is to establish and implement a comprehensive and uniform state-wide urban and rural planned land use to promote physical, socio-economic and environmental development.
