Kano to import petroleum products from Niger Republic

The Kano State Government plans to seal an agreement with Niger Republic to import petroleum products for its domestic use.
It also plans to award a contract for a gas pipeline to supply its planned power plant with fuel.
Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso said this when he opened the first economic summit between his government and Niger Republic to discuss bilateral issues on trade and investment on Tuesday in Kano.
He said the summit with the theme, “Towards strengthening bilateral relations between Kano state and Republic of Niger,” would focus on the success, challenges and future prospects of the socio-economic relations between Kano State and the neighbouring nation.
He added that despite all efforts by the various arms of government of the two countries, daily trading activities across the borders were still facing several problems.
Kwankwaso listed the obstacles to include corrupt practices, intimidation and undue delays at the border posts which he said, led to losses and discourage business.
He said, “It is hoped and believed that, this summit will attempt to address these issues and create a conducive atmosphere to cross border trading activities.
“Let me categorically state here that, Republic of Niger has large quantity of livestock which greater percentage of the market share is based in Kano and by this, we want to explore a situation whereby, more than 1000 herds of cattles will be traded across the border to Kano markets on daily basis without any hindrance”, he told the summit.
